Measure of Environmental Health Literacy for Adults (MEHLA): A Multi Approach Design Research Protocol for Conceptualization, Instrumentation and Media Development
Abstract
background
Enhancing Environmental Health Literacy (EHL) is an effective approach to developing and implementing appropriate strategies for addressing environmental health hazards. To achieve this, it is essential to use a valid, reliable, and culturally relevant tool to measure and assess EHL status among populations. Additionally, applying appropriate educational media can help maximize the effectiveness of interventions.
objective
This study provides a clear roadmap for explaining and defining the concept of EHL, developing and psychometrically evaluating its measurement tool, and designing educational media for relevant interventions.
methods
The present protocol introduces a Multi Approach Design (MAD) research. In the first step, an exploratory qualitative study will be conducted following a systematic review to logically justify its necessity. This study will involve semi-structured interviews to explore and explain the concept of EHL and its dimensions from the perspectives of experts and adults. In the second step, a methodological study will be conducted to develop and psychometrically evaluate the Measure of Environmental Health Literacy for Adults (MEHLA). Dimensions will be extracted, and an item pool will be generated using three sources: interviews, a literature review, and existing measurement tools. In the third step, educational media for EHL interventions will be developed and assessed through both qualitative and quantitative evaluations. Researchers can utilize two main approaches for this purpose.
results
This study has been funded and received ethics approval from Research Ethics Committees of School of Public Health & Neuroscience Research Center - Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. It is expected that it will be completed in December 2025.
conclusions
In addition to providing a clear explanation of EHL and its dimensions, the resulting instrument will serve as a valid tool for measuring EHL in various cross-sectional and interventional studies. Furthermore, the educational media will support planners in implementing effective interventions aimed at enhancing individuals’ EHL to the greatest extent possible.
