Inclusion criteria required participants to be aged more than 18 years, be alert and coherent, have been hospitalized for at least 24 hours, and have received medical clearance to participate in the protocol. Exclusion criteria included invasive mechanical ventilation or circulatory support, neurodegenerative diseases, pregnancy, communication difficulties, or persistent inability to adapt to the VR headset.

The trial population will consist of healthy infants aged 3-14 days at enrollment. Potential participants will be referred by the clinical care team to the investigator to check whether they meet the eligibility criteria, and the investigator will provide a thorough explanation of the trial. The demographics of the participants reflect the general veteran population in rural Midwest regions, with most being male, White or non–Hispanic/Latino, and aged ≥55 years. In total, 45% (99/220) of the participants resided in rural or highly rural areas.
