Sarcopenia and Risk of Cognitive Impairment: Cohort Study and Mendelian Randomization Analysis
Subsequently, we further used MR mediation analysis to examine the degree to which 11 putative mediators (ie, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D levels, physical inactivity, falls, frailty, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, stroke, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes) may impact the effects of sarcopenia, to identify potential intervention targets in the causal pathway.

We used structural equation modeling (SEM) with full-information likelihood estimation to assess the hypothesized mediation model. Latent variables for cyberchondria (CSS-12), HRQOL (EQ-5 D-5 L), mental well-being (WHO-5), and cognitive fusion (CFQ) were created based on the sum score of the 4 instruments. Respondents’ characteristics (ie, sex, age, education level, and presence of a chronic condition) were included in the model for adjustment.

Thus, our secondary hypothesis was that mediation through norms perception would primarily occur among individuals who overestimate other people’s drinking (ie, moderated mediation). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to assess moderated mediation in such a setting.

The data were also analyzed with the Process Macro Model 59 for multicategorical moderated mediation tests to account for the effect of a single moderator on all 3 mediation pathways [52]. Six multicategorical moderated mediation models were constructed to assess the main and interaction effects of the artwork and priming manipulations. The hanging control condition was set as the reference group. Postexperiment pain scores and social disconnection scores were the outcome variables.

Conditional process analysis was used for the moderation and mediation analyses [45]. Separate models were run for the proposed mediation and moderation effects of child characteristics (age, gender, procedure location, and anxiety sensitivity) and level of immersion on the outcomes of postprocedural anxiety VAS and pain FPS-R. All models were controlled for preprocedural pain or anxiety.

Data were analyzed using the statistical programming language R [43] in combination with the nlme package [44] and the mediate package for the mediation analyses [45]. As both the mediator and the outcome model were linear models, the results obtained by the function are analogous to the usual linear structural equation method described by Baron and Kenny [45,46].
