An Online Family Literacy and Wellness Program for Latino Dual Language Learners: Pilot Randomized Waitlist Controlled Trial

Eligibility criteria included primary caregivers aged ≥18 years (referred to as parents for the remainder of this article) of children entering kindergarten who identified as Latino, used Spanish at home, owned a cellphone, and were willing to receive SMS text messages and be randomized. We excluded children with multiple anomalies or genetic disorders, as well as those with previously identified developmental delays.

Therefore, this study uses a computer-based experimental design modeled after Facebook group pages, in which we manipulate the ethnicity of individuals shown in the images (Hispanic vs non-Hispanic) and the language used in the text (Spanish vs English). First, we examine whether preferences for social media pages featuring Hispanic imagery and Spanish text differ based on participants’ self-identified ethnicity.

They found that it was substantially more expensive and labor-intensive to recruit Spanish-speaking participants through social media relative to English-speaking Latino and other groups, with participant acquisition costs differing dramatically between Spanish (US $31 per enrolled participant) and English speakers (US $1.49 per enrolled participant). Bunge et al [17] reported successful Facebook recruitment of Spanish-speaking smokers through Facebook in a clinical trial of a smoking cessation web app.

The goal was to provide access to patients and their families, primarily those who spoke English or Spanish. This design provided an opportunity to compare the use of videos with the same clinical content. A preliminary analysis of You Tube Analytics traffic patterns for one of these videos (“What is an absence seizure?”) showed high use for the Spanish version [7].

To increase the likelihood that the advertisements were perceived as Latinx-targeted and that participants would recognize the celebrities, the advertisements included a slogan with at least 1 Spanish word or the name of the celebrity in the slogan or as a signature. The 16 advertisements (8 pairs) for pretesting included 4 male and 4 female celebrity or noncelebrity pairs and 4 foods and 4 beverages.

The instrument was originally developed for the Spanish population in 1999, but the current social and pharmacological context differs for the population we are now studying. It is important to evaluate the validity and reliability of the instrument when used in contexts different from its original development, to ensure the quality of the collected information. This is because the metric quality of a self-report questionnaire must be explored in the context where it will be applied.

If using a mobile device, they needed to download and install the Epic My Chart app, and then register for an account, which can be done in English or Spanish. Although patients had the option to self-enroll digitally there was significant outreach to assist patients with the enrollment process. In March 2020, teams were created for the express purpose of patient enrollment. The bilingual team (Spanish or English) consisted of 17 staff and was interpreter supported for other languages.

Nutrition-Related Mobile Apps in the Spanish App Stores: Quality and Content Analysis

No studies, however, have been conducted to evaluate the quality and functionality of nutrition apps in the Spanish app stores. Therefore, the aims of this study were to evaluate the quality of popular nutrition-related app platforms in Spain and describe the different characteristics and functionalities of these apps. The i OS (Spanish Apple App Store) and Android (Spanish Google Play Store) platforms were used to search for nutrition-related apps from March 2 to March 16, 2024.
