Secure Messaging for Diabetes Management: Content Analysis
A significantly larger proportion of patients with good glycemic control (n=72, 37.5%) engaged in at least one thread about blood pressure, compared to those with poor glycemic control (n=65, 27.2%; P=.02). Noting this significant difference, we further examined the content among blood pressure–related messages.

However, veterans who reported using the Pain Coach app were younger, on average, than those who reported not having used the app (57.6 years vs 64.2 years; P=.01).
Our follow-up semistructured interviews to the survey provided an opportunity to explore in more depth the motivations underlying app use.

Each component of the SAP (mailings, proactive SM, motivational interviews) was examined separately to explore the contribution of each on the overall rate of adoption (Figure 3). Of the 595 veterans in the encouragement arm who were sent the initial mailing, 17 (2.9%) sent an SM without any additional encouragement.
