For the EC group, we used responses to the prompt, “Since your last report, how many separate times did you use an e-cig?” to calculate weekly averages for EC use. We defined mostly switched as >75% reduction in CPD from week 1 and use of ECs. We defined switching to ECs as those reporting 0 CPD smoked and EC use>0 in a given week.

(A) I don’t want to quit at all; (B) I may quit at some point, but not within the next 6 months; (C) I plan to quit within the next 6 months; (D) I plan to quit within the next 30 days; (E) I am trying to quit.” People who chose an answer other than “A” were considered to be somewhat interested in quitting. Exclusion criteria included (1) current participation in other tobacco treatments, (2) pregnancy or breastfeeding, and (3) inability to connect with research staff through We Chat.

The pilot RCT was performed to determine the feasibility and acceptability of an e-cigarette–based smoking intervention and to compare the effectiveness of counseling and e-cigarette use on smoking outcomes to that of counseling and NRT [16]. Text message–based EMA data collection was used to record smoking patterns.

Thirteen participants were cigarette-only smokers and 7 reported dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Participants reported an average of 7.3 (SD 3.3) years of residence in the United States. Half of our participants were restaurant staff. A total of 9 main themes and 5 subthemes emerged from the data.
