Each member of the pair was then randomly allocated to either group A or group B, and finally group A and group B were randomly allocated by a separate researcher (KJE) using a random number generator to the intervention or control arm in a 1:1 ratio (homes 1-4 and homes 5-8). Some health informatics services, such as those supporting people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at home, have been successfully using courier services to deliver simple-to-install equipment and have then been providing telephone support to patients in setting up this equipment (R Jones, personal communication). Further exploration of the feasibility and long-term cost of delivering and collecting different technologies by courier is needed.
