In Singapore, older adults with poor health, with less education, and residing in low-income housing were found to experience greater difficulties with internet use [24].
The unequal access to digital technology and challenges associated with its adoption among older adults have been well established in the literature [25,26].

Despite the evidence supporting SDM, it is not widely practiced in clinical settings due to several reasons, such as low patient self-efficacy, a power imbalance between patients and physicians, and HCP’s limited time and knowledge [12,18-20].

With regard to the risk of bias, 3 studies were noted to have a moderate risk of bias, while the remaining studies were assessed to have a low risk of bias (Multimedia Appendix 1 [17,25-34]).
Table S1 in Multimedia Appendix 2 [17,25-34] shows a summary of study details related to the 11 studies included. The follow-up period across studies ranged from 3 months to 3 years.

The relevance was rated as low (little or no information), medium (some information), and high (well-described information). The criteria for assessment of relevance were adopted from a previous realist review [33], in which “strategy” was considered in the mechanism section. The methodological quality of evidence (rigor) around each therapy was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) [50]. The MMAT assesses the quality of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies.

The program was designed to address digital access by providing subsidized smartphones and mobile data subscriptions to older adults of low SES. However, the program had a lower-than-expected impact on their target group as the program was put together rapidly to meet the urgent needs during the pandemic, but there were still a substantial number of older adults not reached [22].

More efforts are required from the private and public sectors to provide high-quality mobile devices that can help older adults, especially those with low socioeconomic statuses, overcome their physical impediments.
This pandemic era has shown us the importance of embracing digitalization and how the elderly population has struggled to keep up with this changing tide. Although volunteer-based ground-up initiatives are important in helping this population, they face several difficulties.
