The Limitations of User-and Human-Centered Design in an eHealth Context and How to Move Beyond Them

The Limitations of User-and Human-Centered Design in an eHealth Context and How to Move Beyond Them

It is at the core of the Ce HRe S road map, and in recent years, many developers and researchers have reported their experiences with holistic design (and the Ce HRe S road map) in case studies (eg, the study by van Velsen et al [25]). Holistic design, in its turn, has disadvantages and challenges that design teams will have to deal with (such as ensuring the collaboration of health professionals [65] and ensuring proper expectation management among all stakeholders [66]).

Best Practices and Lessons Learned for Action Research in eHealth Design and Implementation: Literature Review

Best Practices and Lessons Learned for Action Research in eHealth Design and Implementation: Literature Review

To ensure such a match, Van Gemert-Pijnen and colleagues [6] suggest, among other things, working together with relevant stakeholders in all stages of the project, implementing the study results in practice, and continuously evaluating the process. Similarly, co-design has been mentioned as a useful technique for creating e Health systems that suit the needs of the end users [3]. These ideas fit well with the principles of AR, which will be outlined below. Definitions of AR have changed over the years.

The statements for the construct intention to use were based on van Velsen et al [11]. All 3 questions were accompanied by a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Next to these closed questions, respondents were also asked what the main reasons were to “use” and “not to use” the mobile apps. Distribution of the survey (via Qualtrics XM) started on April 15, 2020. Participants were eligible if they were 18 years of age or older.

In addition, Fanning and Mc Auley [7] showed that older adults may accept a tablet for health surveys and van Velsen et al [6] showed that older adults preferred a tablet survey to a paper survey. Research shows that the older and more frail adults get, the more they become nonrespondents to questionnaires [8,9], whereas refusal of face-to-face interviewing is less present in this population [8].
