Furthermore, the study by Oliveira and Canhão [10] identified successful cases of novel patient-developed solutions that made a significant impact on medical practice. Health benefits and social value of innovations can only be achieved when innovations diffuse—when they are adopted and used by other people. In national-level surveys, the fraction of diffused user innovations observed varied from 5% to 17%, with the most common diffusion pathway being peer-to-peer exchange [3,4,11].
