Studies examined in Haider’s systematic review [18] of effective texting interventions among patients with diabetes reflect messaging that occurred subsequent to both diabetes diagnosis and participants’ agreement to take part in the intervention.

Greater e Health literacy, as measured by the e HEALS scale, was associated with patient portal utilization; the mean e HEALS value for the entire sample was 22.7 (SD 9.5), whereas it was 31.7 (SD 6.5) for portal users and 20.2 (SD 8.7) for those not utilizing their portal (P Participant characteristics and their association with patient portal utilization. Usability of a Novel Mobile Health iPad App by Vulnerable Populations

All analyses were done using SAS, version 9.3 (SAS Institute, Inc); P values < .05 were considered significant. Between June 2014 and May 2016, we enrolled 450 participants, all of whom completed the m PATH i Pad program. Participant demographics are displayed in Table 1. Over two-thirds of the participants (305/450) were members of a vulnerable population; 36.9% had limited health literacy, 52.9% had annual incomes < US $20,000, and 37.6% were black.
