Individuals who had undergone bariatric surgery were identified by an algorithm developed by Arterburn et al in 2009, which used the Current Procedural Terminology 4 (CPT-4) codes (43842, 43843, 43846, 43847), and ICD-9 codes (CPT-4 codes 43659, 43621, 43633) [8]. Verification of this strategy resulted in sensitivity of 99.2% and specificity of 99.9% [8].
