Mapping Theories, Models, and Frameworks to Evaluate Digital Health Interventions: Scoping Review
Published gray literature, including conference abstracts or proceedings, dissertations, reports, and white papers, have been included if primary insights resulting from the application of TMFs were presented. Reviews, study protocols, commentaries, and letters to the editor were excluded as they had no primary data.
No limitations were placed on the user population as long as the evaluation of DHIs in a health care context was described.

A scoping study conducted by Oliver and Gray [2] in 2006 found that out of 334 studies, only 9 compared the priorities of researchers with those of patients or clinicians in terms of research and outcomes for assessing treatment effects. If end users, including patients and clinicians, are excluded from the process of establishing research priorities, such as in the selection of research areas or intervention development, irrelevant health research results and interventions might be generated [3].

Owing to time and resource constraints, we were unable to conduct a review of gray literature, potentially missing relevant publications. However, the peer-reviewed sample was extracted from a very large pool of potential articles, which adds to our confidence that the peer-reviewed literature was thoroughly covered. Second, we have observed that the term “complex patient” is defined in various ways in the current literature.
