Diagnosis is typically based on the exclusion of other causes of eosinophilia (eg, allergic diseases or parasitic infections) and histopathological and immunohistochemical studies, permitting classification in the following subtypes: myeloproliferative (M-HES), lymphocytic (L-HES), idiopathic (I-HES), and chronic eosinophilic leukemia not otherwise specified (CEL-NOS).
